Living Green

In an effort to focus on working and living green, we created the AMLI Green Scene Team. This group is comprised of people from all disciplines within AMLI. The team focuses on AMLI's green mission to provide a sustainable living environment for our future. We are not only working to change the way we do business, but we also want to engage our residents in the process.

Below are some steps we are taking as we embark upon our goal to operate greener in all that we do.

We are working on tracking our carbon footprint by property in order to set up a baseline against which the impact of our green initiatives can be measured. We will be visiting all of our communities to assess opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and producing action plans for implementation and measurement.

We are communicating on a regular basis with our residents to suggest ways to reduce their own energy usage and encourage them to reduce, reuse and recycle.
We are focused on reducing our energy consumption including electric, gas and water as well as increasing recycling and reducing our waste.

Some of the initiatives that have already been put in place include:

• Installation of Green Roofs
• Retrofit of all common area lighting with energy efficient bulbs
• Implementation of a recycling program at 100% of our communities
• Utilization of low VOC paints and carpets during replacements
• Development of carpet seam optimization plans for every unit in order to reduce waste upon carpet replacement
• Increase in the amount of Green Products available for our on-site maintenance and management personnel to chose from to manage their daily on-site operations
• Significant reduction in paper usage corporate wide as we eliminate printers and encourage people to print only when necessary.
• Installation of replacement low flow aerators in faucets
• Implementation of policies and procedures for programmable thermostats
• Elimination of bottled water at our corporate offices and significant reduction at our properties

Some of the initiatives that we are currently testing in certain markets include:

• Smart weather-based irrigation controllers to reduce water usage for landscaping
• Low flow retrofit toilet devices which could potentially save approximately 30% of water from each flush
• Researching potential for utilization of renewable forms of energy - solar, wind, geothermal.
