Rock Out for Free at Tunes 'n Trucks in Sunrise, Fla.

Feb 25th, 2015

It’s another beautiful day in sunny Sunrise, Fla.. Are you taking advantage of the beautiful climate you enjoy as a resident of the Ft. Lauderdale area?

If you’re not, but you like the sound of tasty grub and free live music in an  outdoor setting, we’ve got a recommendation. Check out one of the season’s Tunes ‘N Trucks concerts at the Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheater.

Sunrise at Sunset Reimagined

Until 2013, the big free concert series Sunrise residents could call their own was called Sunrise at Sunset. The spring concert series hasn’t gone anywhere. Its name has just changed to Tunes ‘N Trucks. Average turnout at the event, held less than a mile away from the AMLI Sawgrass Village apartment community (going up right near the Everglades Conservation Area), hovers above 800. Lovers of live music and outdoor entertainment flock to the event from throughout the Ft. Lauderdale area. Tunes ‘N Trucks offers essentially what Sunrise at Sunset did, but with more of an emphasis placed on the more than 20 participating food trucks than before.

The Food

Food has always been an important part of Sunrise at Sunset, but not always in the form of food truck meals. In January 2014, after the concert series was rebranded as Tunes ‘N Trucks, 10 food trucks fed hungry revelers at the event. High demand, associated with a record turnout, caused the Leisure Services of Sunrise to add more trucks to the event.

This year, attendees can expect more than a dozen food trucks. Highlights include pasta and panini from Best Pasta, Latin fusion cuisine from Che Grill, burgers from Da Burger Shack, pulled pork sandwiches from La Gringa Loca, and lobster rolls from Red Zeppelin. For the sweet tooth, Batter & Company offers cupcakes and macaroons, and anyone with a hankering for shaved ice can get it from Kona Ice.

The Music

The Sunrise Civic Center Amphitheater, well-designed and set on the water, is the perfect place for acoustic appreciation. The family-friendly nature of the event makes it appealing to everyone, but those with a soft spot for classic rock are even more likely to enjoy the music they hear at Tunes ‘N Trucks.

Tunes ‘N Trucks 2015 Highlights

On Friday, March 20, 2015 you can listen to the Long Run expertly cover The Eagles’ greatest hits. Friday, April 17, 2015 will be a tribute to Billy Joel, with the band Turnstiles serenading fans of the legendary pianist-singer-composer. And on Friday, May 15, 2015, The Rock Show will show off its range with hits from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

Sponsored by Magic 102.7 FM, Tunes ‘N Trucks kicks off at 6 PM on the third Friday of every month this spring. Music doesn’t start playing until 7 PM, but you can secure better blanket space and hit up the food trucks before the music starts rolling if you arrive a bit earlier.
