What is LEED, anyway?
LEED is a rating system that’s used in green building projects all over the world, including new construction, renovations, neighborhood development, residential buildings and even city municipal systems. It’s a roadmap for taking projects at any stage — from conception to completion and beyond — along a path with healthier, more efficient choices that benefit both individuals and whole communities.
A building that seeks LEED certification must incorporate specific steps and policies into its design, construction and/or operation. These standards cover everything from guidance on water-saving measures to solar-powered systems, waste management, transportation infrastructure, building material qualities and much, much more, all of which move the building project in a greener, more eco-friendly direction.
There are several levels of LEED certification, all of which are achieved by earning credits toward specific eco-friendly measures implemented at various stages of the building’s life. Whatever level of LEED you have or are pursuing, though, being certified at all is a huge sign that the building you live in or the neighborhoods you walk through are operated with the environment in mind. It shows that there’s conscious thought and holistic design behind the spaces we occupy — and isn’t that what we all want, anyway?
