Austin’s outdoor ice skating rinks have closed for the season, but the metro area has a couple indoor rinks where you can glide around year-round. If you include San Antonio, even more options open up. Here is a list of places you can ice skate and purchase ice skates in the greater Austin area.
Chaparral Ice
Located in North Cross Mall, Chaparral Ice is Austin’s premier year-round ice skating venue. The family owned and operated skating business is highly regarded and involved in the community. It’s a great place to learn to skate, go for a public skate session, or throw a child’s birthday party. Each year during the holiday season, figure skaters dance to seasonal classics in “A Hollywood Christmas.” Chaparral Ice has its own pro shop, where you can buy skates and gear.
The Pond Ice Arena & Performance Center
Also located in North Austin, The Pond is known first and foremost as a hockey training facility in the area. The Pond hosts in-house hockey programs, clinics, high school hockey games, a corporate hockey league, summer camps, tournaments, and more. In addition, The Pond’s facilities are used for figure skating lessons and sessions and public skating. Public skate sessions are held seven days a week, including cosmic skating for teenagers every Friday evening. Skates can be purchased, maintained, and repaired on-site at The Pond’s pro shop. This Austin ice skating venue is a 10-minute drive from AMLI at Mueller.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Dick’s Burnet outpost has a large selection of ice skates, figure skating apparel, and ice hockey gear. You can shop in-person or online and arrange in-store pick up.
Ice & Golf Center at Northwoods
The Ice & Golf Center at Northwoods is a sprawling, 77,000 square foot complex with an ice skating rink, indoor turf field, arcade, miniature golf course, sports bar, and pro shop. In the pro shop, you can buy state-of-the-art skates, hockey sticks, gloves, elbow pads, and more. Ideal for family outings and birthday parties, Northwoods Ice hosts daily public skate sessions and lessons. Northwoods also sponsors youth and adult ice hockey leagues and hosts tournaments. Farther afield than Chaparral Ice and the Pond, the Northwoods center is an hour’s drive from AMLI South Shore apartments on Austin’s Eastside. If you love to ice skate or are looking to learn, consider a visit the next time you head to San Antonio.
