Three Upcoming Dallas Events Worth Checking Out

by
Sep 5th, 2014

There is always something fun to do in the Big D. But Dallas apartment residents who like to get out and do things on evenings and weekends should find the next several weeks especially promising.

Here are a few upcoming Dallas events that offer food, fun, and entertainment in a family-friendly environment.

Red Bull Air Races

If you’re fascinated by flight and don’t have any major plans this weekend, catch a glimpse of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. Accredited by the World Air Sports Federation, the races taking place this Saturday and Sunday are part of a seven-race championship series that spans six countries on three continents. Tickets start at 9, and on-site camping is available for the real die-hards looking to make a full weekend of this Dallas event.

Those unfamiliar with these air races should try to picture a sports car race on Red Bull. Skilled pilots race through the sky at low altitudes, ascending, descending, and taking sharp turns in an attempt to maneuver dozens of obstacles along the way. This style of racing and the skill level of participating pilots makes a Red Bull Air Race World Championship one of most visually exhilarating shows you can experience. It’s also a testament to the well-known motto: “Red Bull Gives You Wings.”

Texas State Fair

Come one, come all for food, live music, carnival games, and more! The Texas State Fair, held on nearly 300 sprawling acres at Dallas’ historic Fair Park, is one of the biggest events Texas sees all year long. In addition to thrilling rides and carnival games, the fair is renowned for its fried foods. Each year, local chefs compete for the honor of serving their own fried delicacies to the masses. Even health nuts who attend usually indulge in a treat or two. This year’s Big Tex Choice Awards finalists include a chicken friend loaded baked potato, fried Sriracha balls, and a funnel cake flavored ale served in a cup with a powder sugar coated rim.

In addition to the breadth and originality of the fried food menu, something else that makes the Texas State Fair stand out is Big Tex. A 55-foot statue and the face of this event, Big Tex is an icon to marvel at and take photos with. The guy’s head alone is 10 feet in length, and it’s always a treat to see what new outfit he’s sporting. Car enthusiasts can admire the beautiful automotive specimens on display at the Texas State Fair Auto Show. And of course we can’t forget about the State Fair Classic, the Heart of Dallas Classic, and the Texas-OU game, which all take place during the State Fair. This year’s fair kicks off on September 26 and runs through October 19. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. General admission is 7, and a season pass costs 9.95.

Savor Las Colinas

If the Texas State Fair is about chowing down and reveling, Savor Las Colinas is about making a difference. Savor Las Colinas features delicious food samples from more than a dozen restaurants, a DJ, photobooth, raffles, and a silent auction. While the event itself offers plenty of tasty food and beverages to enjoy, its primary purpose is as a fundraiser for the North Texas Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year, this Dallas event raised more than 0,000, a huge leap from the ,000 raised during the event’s inaugural run in 2012.

This year’s goal is 0,000, but with your help and involvement, we can raise even more! This amount is enough to fulfill a wish and more for at least one child in the Dallas area who has a life-threatening illness and is far more familiar with the hospital setting than any young person should be. Savor Las Colinas will take place at AMLI at Escena in Irving, Texas from 6 to 9 PM on Thursday, October 16. This Dallas event is hosted by AMLI Residential and our nearby apartment community AMLI Las Colinas is participating. The event is family friendly, and tickets are available for 2 per adult, per child, or a four pack for 0.

Forbes Magazine has ranked Dallas one of the funnest cities in the country for several years running, and the upcoming events we shared are a testament to this ranking. There is always something going on here, and we will post updates to keep you in the loop and help you Live Life + Love Life both in and out of your Dallas apartment.
