Five Ways to Enjoy a Day Off in Austin's South Shore District

by
Jul 11th, 2016

You don’t have to head downtown to enjoy your next day off in Texas’ beloved capital. If you live on the banks of Austin’s burgeoning South Shore, you can enjoy good food, live music, and some of the city’s most spectacular green space without even crossing the river. Here are a few ideas to inspire your next weekend activity planning.

Lady Bird Lake waterfront

AMLI South Shore, one of the first apartment buildings to be completed in Austin’s mixed-use South Shore District, is a mere 600 feet from Lady Bird Lake. You can spend a day picnicking on the palm tree-lined waterfront, look for live music at a waterfront venue, or walk the well-designed Boardwalk Loop, finished in 2014.

Continental Club

One of the area’s  most legendary live music venues, Continental Club hosts talented rock, country, jazz, and blues musicians from near and far. Step into the iconic establishment, open since 1955, and feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Two to four acts perform each night of the week, making it one of the busiest concert venues in the world’s live music capital. Continental Club is just a five-minute drive from AMLI South Shore, AMLI Downtown, AMLI 300, and the downtown Austin apartments at AMLI on 2nd.

Draft Pick American Grill

The next time you’re figuring out where to screen a major weekend sporting event, consider what Draft Pick American Grill has to offer. One of the most popular new sports bars in Austin, the sports bar is located on the ground floor of AMLI South Shore. Choose from 32 Texas draft beers and dozens of pub food favorites to enjoy while cheering on your favorite team or individual athletes.

Riverside Golf Course

Once upon a time, the green at Riverside Golf Course was the site of the elite Austin Country Club. Today, it is a public 18-hole course with fine views of downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake. Book an early Saturday or Sunday tee time in order to enjoy the course before it’s baked by the midday sun. You’ll still have half the day to spend doing something else.

Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park

If you prefer to play golf with a Frisbee, visit the Roy G. Guerrero Disc Golf Course directly northeast of Riverside. The highly rated park is also home to baseball fields, hiking trails, a covered picnic area, a playground, and downtown Austin’s no-longer-secret “Secret Beach.”

The subject of much development over the last few years, Austin’s South Shore has quickly become a popular alternative to living in downtown Austin. Explore the area’s offerings and check out its amenable new luxury apartments to see why.
