Four Fun Ways to Spend a Summer Weekend in Austin

by
Aug 10th, 2015

Summer is roaring along. If you want to make the most of what’s left, fill in the gaps on your calendar with exciting plans. Make the most of summer in Austin by exploring the sights and sounds that make it a weird, trendy, and excellent place to live.

Take a Dip in Hamilton Pools

Hamilton Pool Preserve is one of the most stunning natural treasures to be found in the Austin area. Its clear, cool freshwater is contained by beautiful rock formations. Waterfalls, spilling over rocky walls, feed into the pools, which have a nice little stretch of beach perfect for sunbathing and picnicking. A traditional haunt for many Austinites, Hamilton Pools are something you should experience at least once while living in one of many Downtown Austin apartments.

Travis County’s treasured Hamilton Pool Preserve was hit fairly hard by the flooding that pummeled parts of Texas early this summer. At the time this post was written, the preserve was open, but swimming was not permitted.

Get to Know Austin by Bike

Like so much else, bicycle tours come in many forms. There are the Austin-in-a-Nutshell tours designed for visitors and newbies looking for an introduction to the city. There are bike tours that focus on Austin’s parks and waterways. There are the eclectic Austin tours, which showcase a range of unique architectural highlights. And there are the PubCrawler bike tours, which essentially give you and your friends a bar-on-wheels to enjoy for an evening.

Catch a Show Outdoors

This may not be the most original suggestion for passing free time, but the live music scene here is so impressive it’s worth reminding people who don’t take advantage of the abundance on offer. Pass a weekend afternoon or evening with food, drinks, and good friends at one of the dozens of bars and restaurants with an outdoor stage.

The Belmont and Cedar Street Courtyard are located less than five minutes’ walking distance from AMLI 300AMLI Downtown and AMLI on 2ND. Threadgill’s is just across of the river. The Mohawk and Stubb’s BBQ are a couple of blocks from AMLI Eastside. Skylark Lounge is a short drive from AMLI at Mueller. These are all popular venues with patio or lawn shows in the summertime.

Watch the Sunset

Sunsets viewed from different parts of Austin are not always equal. On nights when the air has just the right amount of dust and a smattering of light clouds speckle the sky, the sunsets viewed from Mount Bonnell and Pennybacker Bridge are some of the best.

Covert Park at Mount Bonnell offers stunning views over the Colorado River. A couple miles north, the cliffs above the Pennybacker Bridge offer sweeping, 360-degree views over the dynamic and beautiful city of Austin.

While Austin’s mild climate means you can look forward to temperate days further into the fall than people in most other cities, your remaining summer weekends are still dwindling. Before the season slips away, make exciting and memorable plans for your summer weekends coming up.

What are some of your favorite ways to spend a summer weekend day, or an entire weekend, in Austin?
