Throughout most of Southern California, hopes of finding natural ice to skate on can constitute a mere pipe dream. Thankfully, several skating rinks in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties cater to those craving to get out on the ice. For a safer and more realistic alternative to naturally frozen ice, dust off your skates and hit one of these rinks.
ICE at Santa Monica
Downtown Santa Monica’s seasonal ice rink is open until January 16, 2017. The 8,000 square foot rink affords a unique opportunity to ice skate just two blocks from the beach. Attend an open ice skate session or schedule a lesson with one of several pros teaching at ICE this season. The outdoor rink is a 30-minute drive from AMLI Warner Center.
Ice Station Valencia
If you miss the window to get on the ice outdoors in Santa Monica, don’t sweat it. You can ice skate year-round at Ice Station Valencia. The rink is open for public skating sessions every day of the week. Figure skating sessions, lessons, and hockey training are also held. Ice Station Valencia hosts a restaurant and pro shop on site.
Iceoplex
Iceoplex is best known as the training center for the Titans youth travel hockey club. But Simi Valley’s premier ice skating rink also holds frequent public freestyle and figure skating sessions. The complex can be rented out for birthday parties and other occasions. Iceoplex is less than a half-hour drive from AMLI Spanish Hills and AMLI Warner Center.
Ontario Ice Skating Center
One of SoCal’s oldest and largest ice skating venues, Ontario Ice Skating Center caters to amateur ice skaters, figure skaters, ice hockey players, and others. Visit for a public ice skate session, join the Synchronized Precision team if you’ve got figure skating skills, or try your hand at broomball. The center is a 15-minute drive from AMLI’s Rancho Cucamonga apartments.
Pasadena Ice Skating Center
If you live in Pasadena, NoHo, or Glendale, there’s a brand new rink just miles from your apartment. Pasadena Ice Skating Center’s new regulation-size rink is located at the Pasadena Convention Center. The schedule varies, but the rink typically hosts between 25 and 60 hours of public skating per week. Skate rental is included in the cost of admission for groups of ten or more. Pasadena Ice Skating Center is less than 15 minutes from AMLI Lex on Orange in good traffic.
The Rinks Anaheim ICE
Long known as Disney Ice, The Rinks Anaheim ICE offer a visually stimulating ice skating experience. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the venue is aesthetically appealing inside and out. Public ice skate sessions are held almost daily, along with a range of lessons. Anaheim ICE is a ten-minute drive from AMLI Uptown Orange’s apartments near Angels Stadium and Disneyland.
Woodland Hills Ice
Woodland Hills Ice, a two-mile drive from AMLI Warner Center, is the largest outdoor skating rink in Southern California. The Westfield Promenade rink typically remains open longer than most SoCal outdoor skating rinks, but is closed for the first season in almost 30 years. Woodland Hills Ice is expected to open for the 2017/2018 season, so keep your eyes peeled for news about its return next year.
