Tropical birds, mountain mist, and blazing orange volcanic activity come to mind when you think of Costa Rica, and not without reason. Although its economy and population have grown tremendously over the past few decades, Costa Rica has developed in an eco-friendly manner that has preserved virtually all of the country’s natural wonders. And Costa Rica has no shortage of them, especially when its relatively small size is taken into account. If you love nature and outdoor recreation, consider penciling in some of these eco-oriented activities into your Costa Rican vacation schedule.
Zip Through the Rainforest Canopy
Canopy tours enable visitors to view the rain forest from a unique perspective, all the while experiencing a thrill of a lifetime. Long, sturdy cables connect elevated platforms, constituting the increasingly popular “zip-line.” Most tours also include walks along several hanging “canopy bridges.” The Monteverde Cloud Forest is home to the country’s first zip-line tours, and is arguably the best place to zip-line, but canopy tours can now be found in many forested nature havens.
Learn How to Surf
Between the weather, the water temperature, and the quality of its coast’s swells, Costa Rica boasts some of the world’s best surf turf. Comparatively inexpensive prices make lessons affordable, and amenable outposts, such as Playa Negra and Playa Tamarindo, make it easy to find everything you need for the ideal surfing vacation.
Climb a Volcano
Situated on what has become known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, Costa Rica is one of the most volcanically active countries in the world. The country is host to more than 200 volcanoes, almost half of which are still active at some capacity. Thanks to reliable volcanic unrest monitoring and experienced guides who prioritize safety, adventurous visitors to Costa Rica can climb these volcanoes without extraordinary risk. For mountaineers and hiking enthusiasts, an array of non-volcano trekking and hiking options exist as well.
Brave the Rapids
Costa Rica is home to several raging rivers, providing the thrill-seeking water lover with boundless opportunities for adventure. From tame class one rapids to turbulent class fives, there is something for rafters of all skill levels. Have we mentioned Costa Ricans have ranked among the world’s happiest citizens? It wouldn’t be surprising if having world-class recreational activities in settings of unparalleled beauty has something to do with that excess of smiles.
Bathe in Hot Springs
With so much thermal activity, it makes sense Costa Rica has an abundance of naturally occurring hot springs. Spending a few hours relaxing in warm, mineral-rich water is a great way to wrap up a day of grueling activity. Hot springs dot the country, but the most impressive thermal pools can be found near Arenal Volcano in the country’s northwest. Baldi and Tabacon are two upscale springs in the area visitors rave about.
