They say that every dog has his day, unless it’s National Cat Day, that is! So, move over Rover! On October 29th we honor National Cat Day.
Life with a cat can be chaotic, crazy and sometimes just downright silly, but true cat lovers wouldn’t have it any other way. Somehow, despite their demanding behavior, we have fallen head over heels in love with these fuzzy little critters. Keep reading for some purr-suasive reasons why cats have taken over our hearts and our homes.
Why We Love National Cat Day
Cat-titude
Did you ever wonder where cats picked up their unbelievable attitude? It turns out that it all started in ancient Egypt over 4,000 years ago. Apparently, the Egyptians held cats in very high regard. They believed that cats embodied the same divine aspects of their gods. The Egyptian royal class dressed their cats in gold and let them eat from their plates. Pharaohs adored them, took them into their homes and lavished them with a life of luxury. It all makes sense now, doesn’t it? You can thank the Egyptians for your cat’s current-day-cat-titude! Let’s face it, if you had been pampered for the last 4,000 years, you’d have an attitude, too!
Swagger
But isn’t that the allure of cats? That unrivaled sass and swagger? Cats have a way of making you feel like a groveling servant in their royal court. With a flick of their tail, they demand our attention. When they strut into a room, they take command. Don’t we all just admire that level of confidence and wish we could own a room the way that they do?
Magic
Think about it, cats have a magical way about them, an air of mystery. From their sleek, stealthy movements to their mesmerizing eyes, they almost seem supernatural, and we are fascinated by them. It’s almost as if they know something that we don’t, some universal secret of the cosmos that they refuse to share with us. They can’t speak but we can interpret their haughty stare, “I will never share my innermost secrets with you, human. But you may pet me, if you must.”
Frenemies
Cats. We never know, from one minute to the next, where we stand with them. They are either ignoring us from across the room like they have never seen us before or curling up in our lap like our long-lost best friend. They are independent yet clingy, detached yet loving. They demand respect for their personal space but can immediately switch gears, weaving between our legs, mewing loudly for our attention. When we finally earn a cat’s affection it feels amazing and the bonds that we form with them are our highest rewards.
On the edge
Cats keep us on our toes. One moment, they’re snoozing peacefully, the next, they’re zooming around the house at 100 miles per hour like they’ve just remembered a pressing engagement with the living room curtains. This unpredictability is both hilarious and heartwarming. Whether they’re balancing on top of the fridge for no apparent reason or batting at invisible forces only they can see, cats inject a dose of excitement into our otherwise routine lives. And honestly, we can't imagine life without them.
Paws-itivity
Cats still rule the internet with tens of millions of cat photos and videos posted all over social media. Why? Because we just can’t get enough of watching them pounce, tumble and generally cause chaos. A crinkly piece of paper, a feather on a string or a simple shoelace can send them into fits of playful delight. Talk about stress relief! Whether you’ve had a bad day or just need a break from work, watching cat videos seems to be the instant formula for happiness.
Popularity
Who doesn’t crave power, status and popularity? Well take note, there are some cat influencers who have actually surpassed human influencers in sheer volume of followers. Whether it’s a sassy pose, a well-timed meow, or a ridiculous tumble, cats continue to capture our hearts and our clicks. Grumpy Cat became a cultural icon simply by looking, well, grumpy. From Nala Cat to Hamilton the hipster cat, felines have long held the title of undisputed rulers of online fame.
Cat-nap masters
If anyone has life figured out, it’s cats. They’ve perfected the art of the nap, managing to squeeze in up to 16 hours of sleep a day! Meanwhile, humans are struggling to catch a solid eight hours without checking their phones, worrying about that email, or contemplating the mysteries of the universe at 3 a.m. Cats? No way. They’re in dreamland, probably chasing invisible mice or lounging on a cloud made of catnip. Watching a cat sleep is like witnessing purr-sonal enlightenment. They teach us that it’s okay to slow down, take a break, and snooze your way through the chaos of life.
We're hooked
In the end, cats are irresistible for so many reasons: their quirkiness, their cuddles, their unexpected bursts of energy, and their laugh out loud antics. They fill our lives with laughter, provide comfort on tough days, and remind us not to take things too seriously. Even when they’re knocking over our favorite mug or sitting on our keyboards during Zoom calls, we just can’t help but love them.
Maybe it’s time we take a few lessons from the feline handbook – own your swagger, be paws-itive, get as much sleep as possible, and act like the world revolves around you. After all, it seems to be working for them!
