8 World Records Broken in Denver, Colorado

by
Sep 1st, 2021

Denver is a region of great innovation and invention!

Among the great accomplishments of inventors in Denver is the first cheeseburger recipe, the first outdoor Christmas lights, the first wheel clamps (booooo) and the first recyclable aluminum cans (thanks, Coors!).

From medical marvels to scientific discoveries and beyond, there’s no limit to what Denver residents can do, including achieving fantastically unique goals like these Guinness World Records below!

And who knows? Maybe one of you in our luxury Denver apartments will be on this list one day, too!

8 world records broken in Denver, Colorado

Fastest half marathon in a suit (female)

Where: Colfax

When: May 19, 2019

Running a half-marathon is an achievement in itself, but imagine running a half-marathon in a three-piece suit!

Alicia Martinez completed the 2019 Colfax Half-Marathon in just 1 hour, 36 minutes and 37 seconds, officially becoming the fastest to run the distance in a full suit.

Largest gathering of people dressed as gorillas

Where: LoDo

When: October 31, 2009

Whoever came up with the idea of parading thousands of gorilla-dressed humans down the streets of Downtown Denver was either a genius or a madman. But, as they say, one can argue with the methods, but not with the results.

And the results were exactly why Halloween 2009 saw 1,061 gorilla-clad runners race in the sixth annual Denver Gorilla Run. The event, hosted by the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, consisted of a 3.5-mile charity run in support of the work done to protect mountain gorillas and to support the research into their habitats and environment.

The run cost about a hundred dollars for first-time participants, but the steep cost included the iconic gorilla suit that contributed to the record-breaking accomplishment.

Largest gathering of people wearing false mustaches

Where: Sports Authority Field at Mile High

When: November 29, 2015

Alternatively, one could call this the largest convention of suddenly unrecognizable people, but we’ll stick with the official moniker for now.

Set up and facilitated by both the University of Colorado Health and the Denver Broncos, this record consisted of 6,471 people wearing the bright orange colors of the Broncos in support of the team. An impressive collection of mustaches, indeed.

Largest physics lesson

Where: Coors Field

When: May 7, 2009

Mentos and Coca-Cola geysers, potato cannons, solar balloons and liquid nitrogen demonstrations delighted and entertained 5,401 eager participants at Coors Field during a mass physics lesson.

The event, hosted by Steve Spangler Science, NBC Denver and 9News, was the first official “Weather and Science Day Event” and drew thousands from around the city to the lesson. Talk about a packed classroom!

Largest airport conveyor belt

Where: Denver International Airport

When: Right now, we guess?

With Denver International Airport consistently ranked as one of the largest and busiest airports in the world, it’s no wonder that the airport’s resources are just as impressive!

The baggage conveyor system that operates within the 53.09 square miles of airport consists of over 300 computers distributed throughout eight different control rooms, as well as a high-class, high-speed fiber optics ethernet network. There are 6 miles of conveyor belts and over 22 miles of track, about 3,100 regular tele cars and 450 large tele cars and 14 million feet of wiring that connects all the systems together. About 400 frequency readers and 56 laser arrays scan and track the unending stream of baggage traveling through the airport, and this doesn’t even include the many employees and technicians that keep everything running smoothly!

Most tattoos of the same name on the body

Where: Denver

When: May 25, 2020

What’s in a name? Well, a name could be a family tradition, a special meaning, a foreign translation or, in the case of Diedra Vigil, it’s 300 tattoos on her body.

According to Diedra, she loves her name dearly and loves tattoos almost just as much, which is why the opportunity to break a world record for both seemed like just the right thing to do. Go Diedra!

Most bicycles donated to charity in one hour

Where: Colorado Convention Center

When: April 26, 2017

At an annual conference hosted by DaVita Villagewide at the Colorado Convention Center, over 3,500 employees assembled 979 Huffy children’s bicycles over the course of the conference. Once assembled, DaVita donated the bikes en-masse to school students from the Denver area in the span of one hour. Amazing!

Longest paperclip chain in 12 hours

Where: Englewood

When: May 16, 2021

If you’re looking to create a lasting memory with your classmates and close out the grade-school career, then try making and breaking a world record!

That’s exactly what the Kent Denver School class of 2021 decided to do, and their names will go down in school supplies history for creating the longest paperclip chain in 12 hours! Once completed, the chain measured 944.43 meters (1,032.84 yards!) long. That’s over 10 football fields long!

If you’re interested in creating or breaking any of these world records, contact Guinness World Records and set up a consultation with them! Fame, my friend, is calling your name.

Good luck!
