Season tickets for Broadway in Houston’s 2017-2018 lineup sold out in a hurry. Three productions will make their world premieres at the Alley Theatre between now and May. The 2017-2018 season promises to be a banner year for Houston’s esteemed theater district. Here are the season’s most highly anticipated performances.
The Santaland Diaries
Holiday classics A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker are both making runs in Houston this theater season. But if a dose of holiday humor would serve you well, add David Sedaris’ Santaland Diaries to your holiday watchlist. The outlandish tales in the stage adaptation of Sedaris’ 1992 essay give you a glimpse into the chaotic holiday season life of a department store elf. Catch The Santaland Diaries on the Alley Theatre’s Neuhaus Stage between December 2 and December 31.
The Color Purple
Toni Morrison’s timeless classic is one of the most moving literary works of all time. Reimagined for the stage and directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, this story of a young woman’s long journey to love and triumph is as powerful as ever. You can catch The Color Purple as part of this year’s Broadway at the Hobby Center season between January 9 and 14.
School of Rock
Another Broadway at the Hobby Center production, this new musical-based-on-a-movie has garnered rave reviews. The musical includes all of the songs from the Jack Black film, as well as 14 Andrew Lloyd Weber hits written specifically for the stage version. Watch this family-friendly performance at Houston’s Hobby Center between January 30 and February 4.
The Great Society
Last season, Houston was enamored with Robert Shenkkan’s Tony Award-winning play All the Way. This year, Shenkkan’s chronicling of LBJ’s presidency continues in The Great Society. A co-production with the Dallas Theater Center, The Great Society depicts the President’s trials and tribulations at home and abroad between 1965 and 1968. No matter your views, the LBJ presidency was a turbulent one. Relive or get a taste for President Johnson’s early days between January 31 and February 18 on Alley Theatre’s Hubbard Stage.
Hamilton
More than two years after its premiere, Broadway sensation Hamilton is still the hardest (and most expensive) show to score tickets to in New York. If you’ve been patiently waiting for the musical to come to Houston, you’re in luck. The show, based on Ron Chernow’s biography of America’s first treasury secretary, is anchoring Broadway in Houston’s upcoming season. According to the Hobby Center’s box office, public ticket sales launch on March 2, 2018. Plan to be available as soon as public tickets go on sale, as they will be scarce. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s beloved music and lyrics will fill the air at Sarofim Hall in Houston’s theater district from April 24 until May 20.
Holmes and Watson
In a production performed three years ago, beloved private detective Sherlock Holmes perished. Or so we thought. In Jeffrey Hatcher’s newest play, Dr. John H. Watson receives notice that at least three patients in an asylum claim to be Holmes. Watson sets out to solve the mystery of whether Holmes is still alive and to identify him if he is. Get wrapped up in the latest inventive installment in the Sherlock Holmes saga at Alley Theatre’s Hubbard Stage between May 30 and June 4.
