Located 25 miles north of Chicago in Lake County, Deerfield is a highly livable community with fast, convenient access to all the city has to offer. In 2015, Deerfield ranked fourth of 342 places to live in Illinois on a a HomeSnacks.net list. If you’re moving to the Chicago area or live downtown and are looking to move to the suburbs, here are some reasons to consider Deerfield.
Jobs
After opening a tax-increment-financing district in 1982, business development in Deerfield soared. Today, the village is home to several leading technology and medical companies. Baxter International, CF Industries, Consumers Digest, the U.S. subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical, and Walgreens all have their corporate headquarters in Deerfield. Deerfield’s ten largest employers employ a combined 11,000+ employees. That’s a lot of jobs for a village with a population of about 18,000.
Schools
If your children’s education is high on your list of priorities for your future home community, put Deerfield on your radar. Deerfield Public School District has strong performance indicators, with Deerfield High School ranked 7th best in Illinois in 2016. Field trips to placed like the Deerfield Historic Village and other educational opportunities further enrich the experience of going to school in the community.
Parks and recreation
Deerfield Park District manages and maintains 20 parks, a golf club, recreation center, community center, and two public swimming pools. The Sachs Recreation Center, formerly the Chicago Bulls’ practice court, boasts 100,000 square feet of recently renovated recreation space. It is home to a regulation-sized gymnasium, two indoor tennis courts, a racquetball court, swimming pool, indoor track, and more. The Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, a 471-acre nature preserve and historic district that is home to dozens of native animal and plant species, is another great place in Deerfield to spend time outside.
Shopping
Living in Deerfield, you’re just 50-minute train ride from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and other world-class shopping in the Windy City. There’s also plenty of great shopping you can access in Deerfield, without having to make the 25-minute journey to Chicago. Upscale lifestyle shopping center Deerfield Square is home to more than 30 retail and dining operations, including LOFT, Barnes & Noble, and Whole Foods. Deerbrook Mall, located on the border of Deerfield and Northbrook, has a selection of big-box stores to meet many of your other shopping needs. American Mattress, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, Famous Footwear, TJ Maxx, and Vitamin Shoppe all have stores in the mall, a five-minute walk from AMLI Deerfield.
Location
Regardless of whether you work in Deerfield, Chicago, or somewhere in between, Deerfield’s location is convenient. The energy, excitement, and cultural offerings of America’s third-largest city are less than an hour away, but space and privacy are still relatively abundant. The picturesque beaches of Chicago’s North Shore are just five miles east. If comfortable, secure suburban living is what you’re after, you can find it in Deerfield.
