Holiday trees near Downtown Austin

Austin Optimist Club holiday tree lot

If you're looking for convenience with a side of community spirit, the Austin Optimist Club lot on San Gabriel Street should be your first stop! Located at the corner of San Gabriel and North Lamar about 2.5 miles north of downtown, this lot is the closest traditional tree lot to the city center.

This isn't just any tree lot, as the Austin Optimist Club has been selling holiday trees since 1952, making it Austin's oldest tree lot! They've operated from this same location for over 40 years, and every single penny of profit goes directly to youth charities in Austin. When you buy a tree here, you're not just decorating your home, but you’re also helping fund youth sports programs, scholarships and community initiatives.

The selection is impressive for a volunteer-run operation, too. The tree lot stocks Noble Firs with beautiful soft needles and open branch spacing ranging from 2 to 15 feet tall, which are perfect for heavy ornaments and a grand statement. Their Fraser Firs come from the Smoky Mountains and run from 4 to 12 feet; these trees are known for their wonderful fragrance and excellent needle retention for a less messy option. If you're looking for something in the middle price range, they also carry Grand Firs from southern Oregon in 5 to 8-foot heights, along with Natural Douglas Firs.

Beyond the trees, you can also pick up Fraser fir wreaths and Noble fir garland, which they sell by the foot or in 75-foot rolls. The volunteers will also trim your tree trunk, help you load it onto your vehicle and tie it down securely. Just be aware that prices have increased this year due to fires and drought in the Pacific Northwest affecting supply, combined with increased shipping costs.

Montana Fresh Christmas Trees

About 3 miles north of downtown in the Crestview area on Burnet Road, you'll find Montana Fresh Christmas Trees located in the north parking lot of the Saint Louis King of France Catholic Church. Like the name suggests, this family-owned lot brings in premium trees all the way from Montana!

Montana Fresh specializes in its wide tree variety, offering Douglas Firs, Fraser Firs, Grand Firs, Noble Firs and Nordman Firs. Each type has its own characteristics: Nordman Firs are great if you hate sweeping up needles, while Noble Firs have that classic holiday tree shape with sturdy branches for heavier decorations. They also stock handcrafted wreaths and holiday greenery, including garlands up to 75 feet long if you've got ambitious decorating plans.

What sets Montana Fresh apart is their focus on quality, as these aren't mass-market trees that have been sitting in a parking lot for weeks. The trees are freshly cut and transported in refrigerated trucks to maintain freshness, and they also offer delivery service within the Austin area if you don't want to deal with strapping a tree to your car roof.

Elgin Christmas Tree Farm

When Austin families want to make tree shopping into a real outing, many head east to Elgin Christmas Tree Farm in Elgin, about 25 miles from downtown. Operating since 1984, this farm has become a Central Texas tradition — you'll understand why once you visit!

The farm offers choose-and-cut options for both Virginia Pines and Leyland Cypress trees, plus pre-cut Fraser Firs if you'd rather skip the sawing. The experience starts with a free hayride out to the cutting fields, where you can wander through rows of trees until you find your perfect match. Don't worry about bringing tools because they provide everything you need, and once you've made your cut, they'll shake out the loose needles and wrap your tree for the journey home.

The Christmas Cottage on site sells reasonably priced ornaments, decorations and tree stands, plus fresh-made wreaths if you want to complete your holiday decorating in one stop. Free activities keep kids entertained while adults browse, including a giant hay maze, playground, tetherball courts and train rides, and you can visit with farm animals and enjoy the country atmosphere without paying extra beyond your tree purchase.

They often sell out early in the season, so don't wait until mid-December if you have your heart set on cutting your own tree here.

Evergreen Farms

Also in Elgin on Monkey Road, Evergreen Farms offers another excellent choose-and-cut experience about 25 miles from downtown Austin. This family-oriented farm provides both Texas-grown trees you can cut yourself, specifically Virginia Pine and Leyland Cypress, and pre-cut Noble and Fraser Firs from the Pacific Northwest and North Carolina.

The adventure begins with a wagon ride to the cutting fields where you can select and cut your tree. After making your choice, the farm provides tree shaking and netting services to prepare your tree for transport. On weekends they light campfires for roasting marshmallows and operate a concession stand with hot chocolate, s'mores fixings, sausage wraps and snacks.

The farm features nature trails where you can stretch your legs, farm animals to visit and outdoor games including a maze and hopscotch courts. It's designed to be a full experience rather than just a shopping trip, which makes the drive from Austin worthwhile!

Papa Noël Trees

With multiple locations around Austin, Papa Noël Trees has been serving the area for over 43 years. Their closest location to downtown is on Northland Drive near Mopac, about 4 miles away, but they also have spots on South Capital of Texas Highway, US 290 in Oak Hill, plus locations in Bee Cave and Round Rock.

What makes Papa Noël special is their pedigree, as these trees have literally decorated the White House three times. Every tree is grown for 12 years in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains before making the journey to Texas, and they specialize primarily in Fraser Firs, which can only be grown at high elevations and are known for exceptional needle retention.

Papa Noël goes beyond just selling trees by offering delivery within a 10-mile radius of each lot location, and they'll even set up your tree in its stand exactly where you want it. This white-glove service makes them popular with busy professionals and anyone who dreads wrestling a tree off their car roof. They also stock wreaths, garland and tree stands, so you can get everything you need in one stop.

Holiday & Harvest Trees

This Austin family-owned business operates from multiple locations, including Barton Creek Square Mall in Lot B-5 about 5 miles from downtown, Round Rock Premium Outlets and Dripping Springs. They've built their reputation on community involvement, partnering with local nonprofits every season.

Holiday & Harvest brings in weekly fresh shipments from Oregon, specializing in Nordmann Firs, Douglas Firs and Noble Firs. Trees range from tabletop size to 12 feet tall, and they offer handmade wreaths and garland. What really sets them apart is their full-service approach — they provide delivery, installation and even end-of-season recycling for your tree.

The lots are pet-friendly as long as your furry friends are leashed, which is a nice touch if you want to include your dogs in the tradition. The Barton Creek location is particularly convenient if you're already doing holiday shopping at the mall.

Colorful Christmas Trees

If you want something completely different, head about 10 miles west on US Highway 290 to find Colorful Christmas Trees. This veteran-owned business has carved out a unique niche by offering flocking in 12 different colors, so if you've ever wanted a pink, blue or purple holiday tree, this is your spot.

This unique lot stocks Douglas Firs and Noble Firs that can be purchased natural or flocked in your choice of color. The flocking process creates a snow-like coating on the tree that comes in various shades, and while it's definitely not your traditional winter holiday look, that's exactly what some families love about it.

The lot creates a festive atmosphere with free hot cocoa, coffee and adult beverages, while kids get free ornament-making kits and can play on the bounce houses while adults browse. They also offer delivery service and sell stands and wreaths.

Colorful Christmas Trees has become increasingly popular with Austin's creative community and anyone looking to break from your traditional tree looks!

Sweet Eats Adventure Farm

Sweet Eats Adventure Farm in Georgetown, about 30 miles north of downtown, is launching their first-ever holiday tree operation this year! While they're new to the holiday tree game, Sweet Eats is already well-known for their pick-your-own fruit operations and adventure farm activities.

Starting in December 2025, they'll offer choose-and-cut trees as well as pre-cut Douglas Firs. Annual members get early access from November 24-26, while everyone else can start shopping from November 28th. They provide saws, tree shaking and netting, plus what they call "Christmas Tree valet" service.

What makes Sweet Eats unique is that tree shopping can be combined with their full farm experience. While tree cutting itself doesn't require general admission, many families will probably want to enjoy the farm's 30+ activities, including wagon rides, pig races, pony rides and their giant petting zoo. They're also planning special winter holiday events like breakfast with Santa, candy cane hunts and Cookie Palooza.

Retail stores for quick and easy tree shopping

Sometimes you just need a tree without the farm experience, and Austin's retail stores have you covered.

H-E-B locations throughout Austin stock real holiday trees during the holiday season, with the Burnet & Koenig location particularly noted for good selection. Expect to pay around $30 for a Douglas Fir and $45 for a Noble Fir, and while these aren't the highest quality trees you'll find, the price and convenience make them a solid choice.

Whole Foods Market stores often offer bundle deals that include a standard tree, tabletop tree and sometimes a wreath. If you're looking for a basic 6 to 8-foot tree and don't need premium quality, Whole Foods provides a convenient option that won't break the bank.

Home Depot and Lowe's both offer extensive selections with competitive pricing, with Home Depot typically stocking Douglas Firs, Blue Spruces and Fraser Firs ranging from $24 to $55 depending on variety and size. They offer online ordering with same-day pickup at many locations, while Lowe's has one of the largest online selections and offers a 90-day return policy with free shipping on many trees.

Moon Valley Nurseries transform into holiday tree markets during the season, stocking Noble, Fraser and Douglas firs with knowledgeable staff who can advise on tree care and help with selection.

Making your choice

The best spot for your holiday tree really depends on what you're looking for from the experience as a whole. If you want convenience and community impact, the Austin Optimist Club is hard to beat, while Papa Noël delivers premium quality with full service, literally. Families looking for an experience should head to Elgin or plan ahead for Sweet Eats' inaugural season, and if you just need a decent tree at a good price, your local H-E-B will absolutely do the job.

Most lots open the weekend before Thanksgiving and operate through Christmas Eve or until they sell out. Popular varieties and sizes can disappear quickly, especially at the farms, so don't wait too long if you have specific requirements. Whether you're carrying on a family tradition or starting a new one, the real holiday tree options around our Austin apartments offer something for everyone, from the traditional to the colorful, the convenient and the adventurous!

Have fun!
