Austin’s 2nd Street District may be small geographically, but it’s big in every other way. Business owners and community organizers representing the eclectic and conveniently located shops, restaurants, luxury apartment communities, and entertainment venues take it upon themselves to organize philanthropic events that are both fun and humanitarian. One of these events, 2nd Street Soundcheck  just completed its third successful run. Sensory and exciting, the event offered an afternoon filled with food, music, and fun. Proceeds went to the Darrell K. Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Last week, dozens of AMLI apartment residents from around the Austin area gathered to celebrate the commencement of the 28th Annual South by Southwest (SXSW) music and film extravaganza. In traditional Austinesque fashion, this SXSW Kickoff event was described as “very casual, low-key” by AMLI Downtown Community Manager, Jacob Allen.

[metaslider id=7963] The neighborhood now known as Lower Denver (LoDo) sits on land that has been continuously inhabited for several centuries, if not millennia. The South Platte River, which still runs through the neighborhood, once served as the lifeblood to the Arapahoe, a tribe of Native Americans historically living on the plains of Colorado and Wyoming, before it was ever explored by European settlers in America. While working on a South Lake Union apartment development site on February 11, 2014, construction workers happened upon something that was unlike the dirt and rock they generally dig through: A fossilized mammoth tusk. Aware of the significance of their find and the care with which this relic from the past should be handled, the construction crew and staff at property owner AMLI Residential contacted Seattle’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. By afternoon on Valentine’s Day, the fragile tusk had been carefully excavated and transported via flatbed truck to the Burke Museum.
