Live Green in Apartments Striving for LEED Certification

When you choose to live in a LEED certified apartment, you’re choosing to positively affect the environment. That’s what’s important to us at AMLI. Our LEED certified apartments are carefully constructed and designed by AMLI team members who are LEED Accredited Professionals. They are taking the lead in establishing best practices and green construction guidelines that can be implemented on future projects. So, while we do our part to ensure your apartment is constructed with environmentally friendly standards, consider how you can live “green” to do your part as well. 1. Conserve water: Consider how often you let water run when you’re not actually using it. Did you know you can save up to eight gallons of water a day simply by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth or shave? You can even save water in the kitchen by packing the dishwasher as best as you can. Relying on a dishwasher, instead of hand washing, saves a lot of water so don’t spend too much time pre-rinsing. Running a full load through the dishwasher will save as much as 35% of the water used to do hand washing. Thankfully, many AMLI apartments include high-performance, water saving fixtures such as Water Sense shower heads, toilets and faucets. 2. Swap your bulbs: The next time your bulbs burn out, replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). These don’t necessarily need to be in every room; put them in rooms where the lights stay on for longer periods of time. Before you leave your apartment, turn off ALL lights and unplug any chargers not in use, such as cell phones and laptop computers, which still use about 5 watts per hour when they aren’t recharging a battery. 3. Set up a recycling center: All AMLI North Point apartments can easily accommodate a small, recycling area. Separate paper, plastic, aluminum and toss the rest out. Also, try to bring your reusable bags every time you grocery shop. If plastic bags begin to accumulate, recycle them at home, or drop them off at a recycling center. AMLI is committed to partnering with our residents to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible and thereby diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills each month. 4. Paperless payments: Pay your bills online, and stop the paper versions from being sent to you. AMLI offers Easy Pay, a reliable and secure way to pay rent with two options: processed monthly withdrawals from your account, or via credit card using AMLI Connect, our online resident connection service. 5. Support smoke-free living: Select AMLI communities, including North Point, offer smoke-free living with AMLI’s BreatheasyTM program which prohibits smoking by residents and guests inside apartment homes and throughout the community. Smoke-free living creates a healthy living environment for our residents and visitors. All AMLI communities would like to make it as easy as possible for residents to live a positively affective, sustainable lifestyle. Our LEED certified apartments are the first of many sustainable developments created by AMLI as we do our best to provide the most efficient living environments for our future.
