A little bit of visual clutter doesn’t hamper productivity for everyone, but some people work more effectively when their desk is kept tidy. And it’s beneficial for almost everyone to have a desk that is at least somewhat organized.
If you want to be able to find what you need when you need it, follow these basic desk organization techniques.
Maximize Usable Space
While most desks come with drawers, it’s easy for these to fill up with clutter over time. To make sure this doesn’t happen, pick up some organization accessories to help you separate the different items you store in your desk. For example, put a pen and pencil holder on top of the desk to reduce clutter and make it easier to grab the exact writing utensil you need. Or, take advantage of wall space by putting up a magnetized or bulletin board. This will allow you to clip important notes without taking up any desk space.
Get Your Wires Under Control
Is there a tangle of wires, cables, or cords running along or around your desk? If you see a tangle of cords, it’s time to organize. Start by labeling your plugs so you know what each wire or cord belongs to. Then, bundle up your cords with cable cord clips or organizers which keeps them together and untangled. And finally, plug the cords into a surge protector trip to keep them arranged as safely as possible.
Use File Organizers
Are there too many papers on your desk? A hanging file folder system is one of the best ways to organize papers in a space-efficient, easy-to-access manner. It’s fine if you don’t have a drawer to store your hanging files because you can buy specialized containers at an office supply store.
Keep It Clean
If you don’t regularly clean your desk, try to change that. Some people like to clean their desk at the end of each day, while others prefer to do so at the end of every week. Choose a time that works for you, and start to make a habit out of it. Whatever your preference, stick to it so that your desk stays organized.
Getting your desk in order will take some time and effort now, but will save you much more in the long run. Resolve to clean your desk, and start reaping the productive benefits of staying organized right away. You can make the project more exciting by adding some clutter-free decor while you’re at it!
