The winter months can be harsh. Freezing cold temperatures coupled with limited sunlight can really affect your mood. However, there are some things you can do to boost your morale and not only survive this winter, but actually thrive.
How to make the best of short winter days
Morning rituals
Start your day with a hearty breakfast and plan on incorporating exercise or a quick morning walk to boost your energy and your mood. Take advantage of the early morning natural light by planning outdoor activities such as walking the dog or sledding with the kids. Nature walks and hiking may seem like unusual activities at this time of year, however, there is no better time to enjoy the beautiful winter landscapes. Even if it’s cold outside, the brisk air will wake you up and lift your spirits. Spending time in nature is important and one of the best things you can do for yourself.
Let the sunshine in
With shorter days in winter, try to find ways to strategically use natural sunlight. Open your curtains and blinds to allow the sun to shine in. You might try rearranging some furniture to place your favorite comfy chair next to a window where you can enjoy the natural light as you read or work from your laptop. If your indoor spaces still seem a little dark, consider adding some additional lighting to brighten things up. Bright light actually improves your mood. You may even consider a light therapy box that mimics outdoor light. This type of light is thought to cause a chemical change in the brain that lifts your mood and eases other symptoms of depression.
Adjust
Be flexible with your daily schedule to align with daylight hours. Prioritize tasks according to when they can be done to allow for more daylight exposure. Don’t waste your weekends, capture every hour of daylight possible! Boost your mood by spending your time socializing with friends and family while you are away from work.
Get cozy
If you are unable to get outside, make the most of your indoor space with some cozy décor. Candles and warm colors can create a soothing ambiance in your living space. Set up a place to read or do puzzles. Make a comfortable spot for indoor hobbies. They key is to stay active and engaged even while spending time indoors. You may even try joining a virtual club or class that meets online in order to maintain social connections.
Take care of yourself
Cold weather zaps the moisture out of our bodies and is hard on our muscles and joints. Take care of yourself by keeping your body temperature consistent when you go outside. Dress in layers when you go outside and make sure to cover joints and sensitive skin to avoid flare-ups. Thermal underwear can protect your hips and knees and insulated gloves keep your hands and fingers warm. Also, remember a good pair of warm boots to protect your feet.
When you are inside, use body oils and lotions to help keep your skin healthy and hydrated. Also, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water in colder temperatures, so keep your favorite glass or mug on the counter for easy refills. You may even consider using a humidifier in your home, especially while you are sleeping. It will help you sleep better and breathe easier.
Take time to reflect
Winter is a great time to settle in and catch up on reading and writing. There is nothing better than curling up with a good book when it’s dark and cold outside. Spend your extra time diving into one of the classics, like Little Women by Louisa May Alcott or The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. Or, if you are looking for direction and help with creativity, I highly recommend reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. Whatever you choose, research shows that reading regularly reduces stress levels and rates of depression. It can also help with better sleep and can lead to improved self-esteem.
Winter months can also be a great time of year to start a daily writing practice. You might consider starting a journal. Journaling can help you prioritize your problems and concerns and can provide an opportunity for positive self-talk. It is an effective way to reduce stress, help with depression, focus your mind and organize your life.
The take away
The key to thriving this winter is to keep active and stay healthy. Embrace the shorter winter days by planning activities that allow you to enjoy the morning sunshine. Find ways to bring the sunshine into your home and make some cozy spaces for reading and hobbies. When spending time outdoors, remember to bundle up and stay hydrated. Embrace the beauty of winter and spend time reflecting on what is important to you. By following these simple tips, you’ll emerge this spring with a renewed mind and spirit.
