The Denver Mint started in the late 1800s as a gold refinery for all the nearby mines. Today, it’s the largest coin producer in the world and makes over 15 billion coins for the United States each year!
Dinosaurs lived here!
Because of how the Rocky Mountains were formed over 55 million years ago, the literal ground that the ancient dinosaurs walked on is now exposed to the surface and, luckily, to us! In fact, Colorado is where paleontologists first discovered the Stegosaurus, Allosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex species!
Two paleontologists fought over dinosaur fossils
Speaking of dinosaurs, two famous Colorado paleontologists in the 1870s hated each other so much that they sabotaged each others’ digs, stole equipment and caused enough chaos to drive both their careers into the ground.
Lots of ghost towns to explore
Abandoned mines and deserted towns dot the hillsides and mountainsides of the Colorado Rockies, the ghostly remnants of the once-bustling gold and silver rushes that made Denver the city it is today.

Cheeseburgers were invented here
We can’t pin down the exact date and time humanity was first graced with the cheeseburger’s presence, but we can certainly find the first place it was legally trademarked! And that spot is right here in Denver, circa 1935, where inventor Louis E. Ballast’s creation is memorialized with a bona-fide monument in Downtown Denver!
In fact, there have been a bunch of nifty inventions made right here in the city, like Christmas lights and recyclable aluminum cans!
Spooky haunted houses!
With ghost towns, abandoned mines and gold-rush-era tall tales, it’s no wonder that Denver is home to some pretty scary stories and spooky haunted houses. There are grand mansions, which once housed a series of residents who, unfortunately, met unusual and mysterious ends. There are hotels whose halls echo the cries of a lost baby. There are parks which, despite sweeping views of the city beyond, sit atop old cemeteries for the city’s old criminals.
Thriving sister cities relationships
Denver is a world-class city, and it’s especially evident in its thriving sister city relationships with 10 major cities around the globe. Ten parks across Denver honor the cities it’s partnered with, such as Chennai, India; Axum, Ethiopia; Brest, France; and Kunming, China, just to name a few!
The mountains are, like, right there

The Italian mob used to operate out of a Denver restaurant
Denver has a rich history of entrepreneurs, inventors, scientists and more, as well as hosting a few of the more unsavory characters in the city’s history. Case in point, the Denver Italian mob used to operate out the back of a cozy Italian restaurant up in the Sunnyside/Highland neighborhood.
You can still visit the restaurant now, just don't expect any interesting characters heading to the back of the house!
