Types of Citrus Grown in SoCal

by

Southern California is renowned for its ideal conditions for growing citrus fruit, thanks to a unique combination of climate, soil and geographical factors. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate — a climate particularly well-suited for citrus cultivation — characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers which provide the perfect balance of warmth and sunshine that citrus trees need to thrive. The long, sunny days of summer ensure that the fruits develop their full sweetness and juiciness, while the mild winters prevent frost damage, which can be detrimental to citrus crops.

In addition to its gorgeous climate, Southern California has well-drained soil that supports healthy citrus growth. The region's sandy loam soils are rich in essential nutrients and have excellent drainage properties, which help prevent waterlogging and root rot — a common issue for many citrus trees. This type of soil also facilitates the easy uptake of nutrients, allowing citrus trees to grow vigorously and produce high-quality fruit. The natural topography of the region, with its gently sloping hills and valleys, further enhances drainage and minimizes the risk of disease.

Another factor contributing to Southern California's success in citrus cultivation is the extensive irrigation infrastructure available in the region. The availability of water from various sources like rivers, lakes, reservoirs and aqueducts ensures that citrus orchards receive consistent moisture throughout the growing season. This reliable irrigation system helps maintain optimal growing conditions even during dry periods, ensuring that citrus trees remain healthy and productive each year.

Finally, Southern California has a long history of citrus farming, with generations of farmers who have developed specialized techniques and practices to optimize fruit quality and yield. This accumulated knowledge, combined with advances in agricultural technology, enables growers to manage pests, diseases and soil conditions effectively, further enhancing the region's reputation as a premier citrus-producing area.

Here are some of the more popular citrus fruits that are grown right here in sunny SoCal!

10 varieties of Southern California citrus

Oranges

Known for their sweet, juicy flesh and easy-to-peel skin, navel oranges are a staple in Southern California. They are especially popular for eating fresh and making into fresh-squeezed juice, which is what most of them end up becoming. Valencia oranges, on the other hand, are renowned for their juiciness and balanced sweet-tart flavor, making them ideal for juicing. These oranges are often used to create beverages or add flavor to foods and baked goods.

Lemons

Eureka lemons are the most commonly grown lemon variety in Southern California. They are characterized by their bright yellow skin and tart flavor, making them versatile for all kinds of cooking, baking and garnishing. Meyer lemons offer a different profile with their sweeter taste and less acidic bite. They are smaller, rounder and have a thin, orange-yellow skin, making them perfect for desserts, dressings and drinks.

Limes

Persian limes, also known as Tahitian limes, are larger and less acidic compared to Key limes. They are widely used in cooking and drinks due to their milder flavor and juiciness, and they’re the most popular kind found in grocery store shelves in the country today.

Key limes, on the other hand, are smaller, with a more intense tartness and a distinctive aroma that’s most famously used in Key lime pie and cocktails.

Grapefruits

Ruby Red grapefruits are popular for their sweet, juicy flavor and vibrant reddish-pink flesh that’s enjoyed both fresh or juiced. White grapefruits have a more tart flavor and a pale yellow flesh, offering a more tangy taste compared to the Ruby Red variety. Both types of grapefruit are appreciated for their refreshing qualities and health benefits.

Tangerines

Clementines are a small, sweet and easy-to-peel variety of tangerine, making them a popular and convenient choice for snacking. Their bright orange color and juicy segments are particularly appealing, especially as a child-friendly fruit!

Satsumas are another favorite, known for their sweet flavor and seedless nature. They are easy to peel and often enjoyed fresh, adding a burst of sweetness to any meal or snack.

Mandarins

Sumo citrus is a large, easy-to-peel variety of mandarin with a sweet, juicy flavor. Its large size and taste make it a fan favorite for eating fresh or including in salads and desserts. Dancy mandarins, with their rich, sweet flavor and vibrant orange color, are also often enjoyed on their own or added to fruit salads for a burst of citrus flavor.

Pomelos

Larger than a grapefruit and with a thick exterior, Chandler pomelos are known for their mild, sweet taste and thick, greenish-yellow rind. They are larger than other citrus fruits and have a grapefruit-like flavor without any of the bitterness. Thai pomelos are typically larger and more tar and offer a more pronounced citrus taste, similar to grapefruits, that’s often used in savory dishes or enjoyed fresh.

Kumquats

Kumquats are olive-sized oranges with a peel thin enough to eat!

Nagami kumquats are oval-shaped, with a sweet skin and tart flesh. They are unique because the peel is sweeter than the interior, offering a unique contrast in flavors and texture. Meiwa kumquats are rounder and generally sweeter and less tart than the Nagami variety and, as a result, are commonly used in preserves, marmalades or eaten fresh.

Bergamot oranges

Bergamot oranges are primarily grown for their aromatic peel, which is used to flavor Earl Grey tea and in various culinary applications. Their distinctive scent and flavor profile make them a sought-after ingredient for adding a fragrant citrus note to both sweet and savory dishes.

Citron

Ethiopian citron is notable for its large, yellow and bumpy rind. It is often used for its zest and peel in cooking and preservation. This variety’s thick rind and aromatic qualities make it ideal for flavoring dishes and making preserves, where its robust citrus flavor can shine. In fact, the citron (along with the mandarin and the pomelo) is one of the original types of citrus fruit from which all other citrus fruits have been bred!

If you live in or near our sunny Southern California apartments, then be sure to pick up some of these citrus fruits next time you’re at a farmers market or local produce store. After all, you’re getting the best of the best, so make use of it!

Enjoy!
