How To Turn Your Pet Into an Influencer

by
May 15th, 2025

Petfluencers are pets with large followings on social media. They have become a major trend in digital content and influencer marketing. From Instagram famous cats to TikTok savvy dogs, pets are becoming more famous than reality TV stars, and they don’t even need to stir up drama.

But behind each popular pet account is a strategic and consistent approach to content creation, branding, and audience engagement. If you're thinking about turning your pet into a social media star, it takes more than just cute photos — it requires planning, personality, and a clear understanding of how these platforms work.

How to Be a Petfluencer

Discover your pet’s persona

All pets have a persona. Your dog can be laid back and easy going or chasing squirrels like a maniac through the backyard. Your cat might be sweet and cuddly or plotting world domination (as most cats are). Figure out your pet’s personality and use that to your advantage. Give them a presence, whether it’s their adorable clumsiness or their weird quirks, people love character.

Pick a platform

Petfluencers are typically found on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, and even on YouTube Shorts. Instagram is great for deliberate visual design posts with a particular style, stories and reels. TikTok is ideal for silly skits, quick chaotic videos and challenges. Facebook works well for cute photos and videos of your pet. YouTube Shorts is better for longer videos, usually between 15-60 seconds, geared at adventures or training videos. It’s important to choose one or two platforms to start with, don’t try to conquer everything at once.

Content Creation

Videos should be short and sweet, remember attention spans are shorter than the time it takes your dog to destroy a brand-new chew toy! Document your pet’s cutest and weirdest moments. Give them a voice, add a funny caption or dramatic music. The goal is to create content that immediately captures your audience’s attention.

Build your audience

Engagement is key when building a following on social media. Likes, comments and shares prove your content is interesting and measure your effectiveness. Build engagement by collaborating with other petfluencers and genuinely comment on their accounts. Use Stories to share behind-the-scenes silliness or run a giveaway to get people interested. And, always reply to fans, even if the comments aren’t so great.

Be consistent and weird

Decide on a posting schedule and stick with it. Being consistent builds trust and people come back for more when they know what to expect. Create a catchy series title like, “Freaky Fur Friday” then steadily post on that day. Make your pet’s daily life the roadmap to your content. Nap time? Post it. Barking at a leaf? Post it.  And, remember to be patient. It will take time to gain a following.

Measure

Use platform analytics to see what’s working. Measure the performance of your content over time. As your engagement builds, the more valuable your account becomes.  Do people love your “Monday Mishaps”? If so, post more of those. Pay attention to what other influencers are doing, you can learn from them.

Treat money

Once your account gains attention, you might attract sponsorships. There are several ways to earn a little extra treat money, such as paid posts for pet products, affiliate links, merchandise (stickers, t-shirts, etc.) and even cameo videos (some people will even pay for your dog to say happy birthday). Remember, the most successful petfluencers create amazing content, understand their audience and know how to connect with them.

Have fun

At the heart of petfluencing is the simple joy of sharing your pet with the world. Whether they’re doing backflips or just snoozing in the sun, there's something about animals that connects people across the internet. With a clear voice, fun content, and a dash of patience, you can grow a following that loves your pet almost as much as you do.

So grab your camera, follow the fur, and don’t forget the treats—you’re officially your pet’s social media manager now, and their fame depends on you.
